Blank Canvas in Tosh DK

September 17, 2015 Julie Petrella

{insert contented sigh} I'm still kinda enjoying the fact that I met my personal goal of finishing this sweater by Labor Day. And, on top of that, I'm pretty darn satisfied with how I've added a new and perfectly basicsweater to my wardrobe. So often I'm drawn to the more "exciting" brighter yarn colors with my knitting. As someone who's mood is easily influenced by color, brighter usually means better. This time, however, I'm glad that I resisted that temptation so I could create a wardrobe item that I know I'll wear over and over. Because even if you're wearing basic black you can always wear red shoes!

The pattern is Ysolda Teague's Blank Canvas, a simple yet flattering pullover with a feminine shape, and the yarn is Madelinetosh Tosh DK in Onyx, a squishy, super wash hand-dyed merino wool. Depending on the lighting, my sweater can look pitch black or marled black. I love it!

Blank Canvas was our summer sweater project -- what I was calling the Blank Canvas Knit-A-Long or KAL. A group of us met every Tuesday night for the months of July and August and then, because we were having so much fun and were still working on our sweaters, we decided to extend it to Tuesday nights in September.

During our Tuesday nights, we've covered knitting topics and techniques like how to choose proper yarn and needle size for your project, a variety of increases and decreases, short rows, picking up stitches, fixing mistakes, and three-needle bind off. An impressive feat for several of our participants who are knitting their first adult-sized sweater! We also cover other important topics like who's obsessed with Ray Donovan, book recommendations, we trade summer vacation stories, and gush over each others' handmade projects and love of craft supplies like only your "people" can.

Now that some of us have wrapped up our Blank Canvas sweaters and others are nearly finished, we still aren't quite ready to let our Tuesday night meetings go. SO. . . our group has evolved into what we're calling Sweater Club -- a group that still meets every Tuesday night from 6 - 8PM and knits the same sweater together. You attend whichever Tuesday nights suit you (just RSVP by that afternoon) and, for $10 per session, you get all the help, encouragement, crafty serenity, and community needed to complete the project at your own pace.

We've chosen Jane Richmond's Palladio pattern as our next project. And, because we love Madelinetosh Tosh DK so much, we're using it AGAIN! It's also the yarn recommended in the pattern. I'll be starting mine soon and will post more about Palladio when I do. I'll also try to get our participants to model their own sweaters so I can post them here. A group photo at the very least, right?

If you'd like to join our Sweater Club, you have two sweater project options -- 1) you could join us as we start Palladio OR 2) if you're sad you missed the beginning of our Blank Canvas KAL, you can work on a Blank Canvas of your own! Just chat about it with me in the shop or send an email to julie AT behomemade DOT com and we'll figure out what's best for you. And, if you're not quite ready for a sweater, check out our other knitting classes being offered this Fall on our class schedule here.

Also worth noting, we're expecting our next shipment of Tosh DK by mid-October so if you're planning to join our Sweater Club, be sure to check with us about available stock before you get your heart set on a certain color.
