Felt Birthday Banner

Have I told you how much I love felt? The wool/rayon blend I have in the shop has just enough softness and sturdiness to make it easy to use. It comes in such pretty colors–you can make just about anything with it.

This week I was asked to create a “Happy Birthday” banner and nearly jumped at the chance to play with felt. Yes, I get that excited about felt. No shame in geeking out over craft supplies.

For this banner, I cut out triangles in a variety of colors. As requested, I chose colors that were “not too girly, but still cheerful” since this was for a grown man turning 65 years old. Had it been for a 10 year old girl, I would’ve gone to town with pink and pom poms. But, I showed restraint.

I printed the banner letters from a document in Microsoft Office and then pinned them down on white felt to stabilize while I carefully cut out each letter. Then, I machined stitched each letter to its triangle. To finish it up, I used thin gray twill tape and stitched it along the tops of the triangles (you can even add a loop in your twill tape at each end for easy hanging).

It still needed a little something. And, that something was (and almost always is) pom-poms! One at each end was just enough to add to this already festive banner.

I’m really pleased with the final result and am already plotting a few follow-up banners. For special occasions OR just because they’re cute!

And, speaking of felt, I can’t wait to make these! Would your kids love to play with felt food?
