In our house growing up, my bedroom was down the hall from our living room. After my brother and I would be put to bed, my Dad would settle in to watch MASH and Cheers. The theme song to Cheers is forever associated with my memory of this scene.
I remember how either I wouldn’t yet be asleep or, if I was asleep, how I would be woken up by the sound of him cracking himself up while he watched his shows. He was having so much fun. To get a closer snoop, I would tip-toe as quietly as I could down the hall so I could lean against the wall unseen to try to hear what was so darn funny.
Really, the funniest part wasn’t the TV shows. It was listening to my Dad laugh. To this day, when something is really really funny, my Dad’s laugh becomes the best part of the joke.
Aside from enjoying a good chuckle, my Dad loves him some golf. On this Father’s Day, he’s watching his man Phil Mickelson at the U.S. Open. So, we’ll celebrate next weekend when I’ll make him one of his favorite desserts to show him some Father’s Day love. I think I’ll make him this, too. Because sharing a good meal with family, with loads of sometimes tear-inducing-laughs, is the best. And, in Dad’s book, even better if it’s after a game of golf.
What’s your favorite memory of your Dad? And, how will you celebrate him today?
