Craftin’ for a Cause: Make a Pillowcase with ConKerr Cancer

ConKerr Cancer Pillowcase

Have you heard of ConKerr Cancer? It’s a terrific organization devoted to making pillowcases for kids battling cancer as a way to bring cheer to their hospital rooms and smiles to their faces. From ConKerr Cancer’s website:

“ConKerr Cancer started when Cindy Kerr’s son was diagnosed with cancer in 2002 and she began making pillowcases to brighten up his hospital room and put a smile on his face. He loved it and so she began making pillowcases for other children on the Oncology Unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Since then, the pillowcase project, A Case for Smiles, has provided nearly 430,000 pillowcases made by thousands of volunteers from across North America and in South Africa.”

Maybe you’ve already stitched some pillowcases for this charity or a similar one. Or you watched the segment about ConKerr Cancer on “The Martha Stewart Show.” You can click here to view the segment. You can also check out Conkerr Cancer on Youtube by clicking here. Maybe you’re just hearing about this effort right now. On this blog! The important thing is we’re now all on the same page.

I think we can all agree that we’ve gotta spread the good will. And, I bet we’d agree that crafting for the said spreading of good will is a pretty sweet way to do it. I think you know where I’m going with this. Soooo, let’s make some pillowcases already!

Home Made has teamed up with ConKerr Cancer to host a day of makin’ pillowcases. All pillowcases will be donated to kids at Cape Regional Medical Center, Shore Memorial Hospital, Atlanticare Regional Medical Center, and Southern NJ Regional Medical Center. Here’s what you need to know:

WHEN:  Saturday, March 24, stop in anytime from 11 AM – 3 PM

WHERE:  Home Made, 1761 N. Route 9 in Swainton (next to Sand Barrens). You can find directions here.

WHAT:  Stop by, choose two fabrics, and stitch a pillowcase—no sewing experience required! ConKerr Cancer volunteers will take care of washing, packaging, and dropping off to area hospitals. Ages 8+ are welcome!
(Though, kids must be accompanied by an adult).

COST:  $12 to participate (includes all materials)

Help us anticipate who’s comin’ and goin’ by submitting your RSVP on Facebook here. And, if you’d like to spread the word by printing or distributing flyers (which would be super cool of you), you can download the pdf here: Craftin’ for a Cause with ConKerr Cancer Flyer.
